Taekwondo Basics Class 1: How to Bow, Proper Warm-Up, and Mastering the Front Kick (Ap Chagi) + Low Block (Arae Makki)

Welcome to Your First Taekwondo Class!

Do you wanna start your Taekwondo journey? The key to begin any form of martial arts you need to learn Are you ready to begin your Taekwondo journey? Before throwing your first kick, it’s important to understand the core values of martial arts—discipline, respect, and proper technique

In this first class, you'll learn:
✅ How and When to Bow in Taekwondo (Kyong Ye / 경례)
✅ The Best Warm-Up Drills to Improve Flexibility & Prevent Injuries
✅ Step-by-Step Breakdown of Ap Chagi (Front Kick) & Low Block (Arae Makki)
✅ Strength & Balance Drills to Improve Your Kicking Power

Standing Bow (Kyong Ye / 경례):

  1. Stand in attention stance (Charyot / 차렷) with heels together and toes slightly apart.
  2. Hands are by your sides, fingers straight / fist.
  3. Keep your back straight and look forward.
  4. Bend at the waist about 15 degrees while keeping your eyes downward (without losing sight of the person you're bowing to).
  5. Hold for a moment and then return to the attention stance.




When to Bow in Taekwondo:

  • When entering or leaving the Dojang.
  • At the beginning and end of class.
  • To your instructor as a sign of respect.
  • To your training partner before and after sparring.
  • During belt ceremonies or special events.

Etiquette and Meaning:

  • Bowing is not just a physical action but a reflection of humility and respect.
  • It symbolizes a willingness to learn and acknowledges the traditions and values of Taekwondo.

Warmup:

  1. Running
  2. Neck Rotations
  3. Trunk Twists
  4. Hip Twists
  5. Knee Circles
  6. Socket Stretch
  7. Sitting Hamstring Stretch
  8. Horse Stretch
  9. Full Split Side
  10. Full Split Front
  11. Hip Circles
  12. Hip Twists

Front Snap Kick (Ap Chagi):

  1. Chiryat ==> Junbi ==> BalChagi Junbi
  2. Practice Reaching Knee Forward By Pushing Hips 10x each leg
  3. Practice Full Extension 10x each leg

Low Block (Arae Makki):

  1. First Left Punch as Hammer Fist, comes to right shoulder then all the way down to block (do it vice versa) 
  2. Do it with footwork (step forward and backward)
  3. Do it with footwork (Pivot on both sides)

Front Kick + Low Block:

  1. Step Forward with block and do Ap moorup Chagi with other leg also push hip do it from both Sides 10x each.
  2. Do Above Task Again, but this time with full Kick Extension Ap Chagi
  3. Do it with pivot footwork

Conditioning Parts:

  1. Find a balance Spot like Wall, Chair to balance on one leg 
  2. Now We'll do Ap Chagi by keeping the knee on its place (10x - 3set each)

Cool Down and Stretch:

  1. Standing Quads / Front Hip Flexors Stretch
  2. Half Side Splits Elbows / Hands on Surface Turn to both Sides
  3. Full Splits sit down slowly and make sure your feets should not close and Move Forward Finger walk and Side by Side as well.
